Do you need a GPU for live face swap?

Not with LiveSwap.ai: the AI runs on cloud models, so a browser, a webcam and a steady connection are enough. Local tools are different; here is what they need.

No, not with LiveSwap.ai. The face swap runs on cloud AI models, not on your computer, so a recent browser, a webcam and a steady internet connection are enough. You only need a strong GPU if you choose a tool that runs the model locally.

What you need for LiveSwap.ai

  • A recent browser such as Chrome or Edge, on Windows, macOS or Linux.
  • A webcam, with one person in view and even light.
  • A steady connection. Your camera is streamed while you generate, so upload matters as much as download.
  • An account. New accounts get 30 free credits, about one minute on X-Max 2.1.

There is nothing to install. The optional Windows app adds a virtual camera, LiveSwap Camera, for meeting and streaming apps.

Why no GPU is needed

LiveSwap.ai sends your camera stream and the chosen reference to a commercial model run by its maker: X-Max 2.1 or Lucy 2.6. The model does the heavy work on their servers and streams the result back to your browser. Your computer only shows the camera preview and the AI output. Because these are commercial models built for real-time video, they also look better than the open-source models a home GPU can run. Which models we use and what they cost

What local tools need

ToolHardware it asks for
Deep-Live-Cam

NVIDIA GPU with CUDA, or Apple Silicon; a CPU mode works but is slower

DeepFaceLive

Windows 10, a DirectX 12 card; RTX 2070 / RX 5700 XT or better recommended

Swapface (Windows)

Minimum NVIDIA RTX 2060 / 3060 with 6 GB VRAM and 16 GB RAM; recommended RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB / RTX 5070

Cloud or local?

  • Cloud (LiveSwap.ai): works on any computer with a browser, starts in a minute, charges by the second. Your camera stream is sent to the model provider while you generate; LiveSwap.ai does not record it.
  • Local: no per-minute cost and video stays on your computer, but you need the GPU, the setup and the upkeep.

Tips for a smooth result

  • Face the camera with even light and keep one person in view.
  • Close other heavy uploads (cloud backups, other streams) while you go live.
  • Start with slow head turns before faster movement.
  • On the web a session lasts up to 5 minutes, then you start again; the desktop app can continue automatically.
